Who Will Be Helped?
The new Royal Jubilee Hospital provides an unparalleled healing environment for patients staying in hospital during their diagnosis and recovery process from illness, surgery, or injury. It supports multiple areas of patient care and facilitates specialized medical teaching.
|
With eight storeys and an initial capacity of 500 beds, the Patient Care Centre unites into a single facility inpatient units that were spread throughout multiple buildings. It supports the Royal Jubilee’s role as a teaching hospital with the Island Medical Program, encourages leading-edge research, and incorporates the particular needs of older adults with functional features that benefits all patients, regardless of age. |
Areas of Care
The Building Care Together campaign supports equipment needs in multiple areas of care:
|
General Medicine, Oncology Care, and Lung Health
Levels 4 to 8 of the Patient Care Centre provide general medical care. General medicine is hospital treatment that does not involve the operating room, and covers many areas of patient care, including oncology (cancer) care, kidney care, digestive health, and lung health. The adaptable design of these levels is also well-suited to patients with infections or chronic health challenges, such as diabetes or arthritis, allowing caregivers to keep patients comfortable while limiting the number of times they must be transferred during their stay.
|
General Surgery, Burns and Complex Wound Care, Bone Health, and Rehabilitation
Patients recovering from surgical procedures and those who require rehabilitation or treatment for their bones are cared for on levels 6 and 7 of the Patient Care Centre. A four-bed Complex Wound Care unit on level 7 also provides specialized burn-treatment rooms equipped with airtight transition spaces to the common areas of the unit to help keep unsafe contaminants away from these particularly vulnerable patients.
|
Mental Health
For the first time at Royal Jubilee Hospital, mental health patients are cared for in the same building as other acute patients. Moving inpatient mental health care from the Eric Martin Pavilion to levels 1 and 2 of the Patient Care Centre has improved the access of mental health patients to appropriate medical treatment, and provided a dignified union between physical and mental health. Integration also benefits patients in other medical units who may have mental health needs but who were admitted for other medical reasons.
In July 2011, Courtnall brothers Geoff, Bruce, and Russ raised $900,000 for mental health needs in the Patient Care Centre with the third Courtnall Celebrity Classic. Previous Courtnall Celebrity Classics, held in 2003 and 2004, raised more than $2 million for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation and helped create the Archie Courtnall Centre, which opened in October 2004.

SMART Hospital Technology
Throughout the Patient Care Centre, the use of SMART technology, such as high-tech beds, wireless communication devices, an equipment-tracking system and a medication-distribution system gives caregivers more time to do what they do best — provide patient care.
|
Heart Health
Level 3 of the Patient Care Centre is devoted to cardiac patients. To save precious time during a crisis event, the Heart Health floor is aligned with cardiac services in the Diagnostic and Treatment (D & T) Centre — including the Coronary Care Unit and the Cardiovascular Unit — and is connected to the third floor of the D & T Centre via an overhead walkway. The Clinical Teaching Unit on this level provides a forum for health care professionals from different disciplines, or with different areas of expertise, to share their skills and knowledge.
|
Patient Learning and Staff Development
The Patient Care Centre fosters a work environment where technology and knowledge empower staff and physicians to improve the quality of patient care. It encourages leading-edge medical research and facilitates Royal Jubilee's role as a teaching hospital with the Island Medical Program.
The main floor lecture theatre, with its large seating capacity and state-of-the art multimedia abilities, is a gathering place for staff to share, listen and learn about improving patient care in collaboration with other facilities on Vancouver Island and across the country. A simulation teaching bedroom is also available for use by hospital physicians, staff, and advanced medical residents.
|
Patient Healing and Family Support
Each element of the Patient Care Centre was carefully designed to promote healing and support the recovery process. Over 80 per cent of patients enjoy single-occupancy rooms — the most important evidence-based design feature for improving patient outcomes and quality care, particularly infection control. Patients and their families will also benefit from the thoughtful inclusion of spacious family visiting areas furnished with sleeper couches, as well as sunrooms, teaching resource areas, and beautifully landscaped outdoor gardens.
